  • Choose an appropriate setting, somewhere private and comfortable where the person receiving the news can process their emotions without feeling exposed.
  • Be compassionate, show empathy and understanding. Acknowledge the persons feelings and be prepared to offer comfort.
  • Allow time for reactions, give the person time to process the news. everyone reacts differently to grief be patient with them.
  • Offer support, let them know you are there for them, offer practical support and emotional support.
  • Provide information, if they have questions, provide clear honest answers don’t overwhelm with details.
  • Follow up after the initial conversation check in on the person see how they are coping and if they need any further support.
